Palms Tree Species

4 tree species from Palms.

Coconut Palm

Palm (Monocot)

Coconut palms are the classic tropical tree and a major source of tree service work in South Florida, Hawaii, and other tropical areas. Falling coconuts are a real liability concern, as a mature coconut weighs 3-4 pounds and falls from heights of 50-80 feet. Regular fruit and frond removal is an ongoing maintenance need. Dead fronds, known as widow-makers, can fall without warning and cause injury or property damage. Hurricane preparation and post-hurricane cleanup are major service drivers. Lethal bronzing disease (formerly called lethal yellowing) is a fatal phytoplasma disease spread by planthoppers that kills coconut palms within months. Climbing or bucket truck access is typically required for maintenance.

Sabal Palm

Palm (Monocot)

Sabal palms, also called cabbage palms, are the state tree of both South Carolina and Florida. They are extremely wind-resistant and frequently survive hurricanes that topple other trees. The trunk has no cambium layer and does not heal from wounds, so any damage (including from climbing spikes) is permanent. Using climbing spikes on palms is considered malpractice by certified arborists. Sabal palms require frond trimming but should never be over-pruned. The practice of 'hurricane cutting' (removing all but a few fronds) actually weakens the tree and should be avoided. Sabal palms are protected in many Florida jurisdictions, and permits may be required for removal or relocation.

Date Palm

Palm (Monocot)

Date palms are common landscape trees in the arid Southwest, particularly in Arizona, California, and Nevada. They produce heavy clusters of dates that require removal in landscape settings to prevent mess and pest attraction. The fronds are large and armed with sharp spines at the base that can cause serious puncture wounds. Pruning requires heavy gloves and careful technique. Dead frond boots (the bases of old fronds) accumulate on the trunk and create habitat for rats, scorpions, and other pests. Skirt removal is a common service. Date palms can weigh several tons and require heavy equipment for removal. South American palm weevil is an emerging threat in the Southwest.

Royal Palm

Palm (Monocot)

Royal palms are the classic boulevard palm of South Florida, instantly recognizable by their smooth gray trunk and bright green crownshaft. They are self-cleaning palms, meaning dead fronds fall off on their own, which eliminates the need for regular frond trimming but creates a hazard from falling fronds that can weigh 30-50 pounds. Royal palms are fast-growing and get very tall, which makes any work on them a bucket truck or crane job. They are somewhat cold-sensitive and suffer damage below 28 degrees F. Ganoderma butt rot is the most serious disease, causing a slow, incurable decay of the lower trunk that eventually leads to failure.
